The following account was posted on the recently defunct "Experience Project" website. A forum where people share all kinds of real life experiences. As more girls join up with boxing and kickboxing gyms, this kind of incident is becoming more and more common...
I
recently had a kickboxing match at my gym with a girl and I lost. I'm very
disappointed in myself and feel really embarrassed. I lost in front of my kids
and girlfriend. What's upsetting is this girl is new to the sport and she's
only been training for a month and I've been doing this for years. What's even
more embarrassing is this girl is 18 yrs old and I'm 36 she's half my age. We
had a three round exhibition match at our gym I was supposed to just spar with
her and correct her in the ring however in round 1 I walked right into one of
her kicks and it floored me! I got up too soon and I was still wobbly legged
and everyone at the gym was stunned and I didn't have my legs under me yet that
she caught me with a second kick to the face and I fell again. This time I took
the full 8 count and she almost finished me off in round 1 I had no choice but
to retreat and back petal and clinch to survive the round. It was embarrassing
my two children who are close in age to this girl had looks of disappointment
on their faces. Luckily I was able to regain strength in my legs after the break
and I came after her in round 2 no longer was I trying to teach her I was
trying to beat her! But she played it safe and fought a smart fight she backed
up and got on her bicycle for the next two rounds and avoided my power. We took
it to a decision and I lost by a score 28-27 round 1 was scored 10-7 in her
favor because of the two knockdowns but I took the next two rounds 10-9 &
10-9 however that first round killed me! When they raised her hand and
announced her the winner the look on my children's faces were that of
disappointment and my girlfriend stormed out upset. Even though I won 2 of the
3 rounds Briana (girl that beat me) won the fight because of the two early
knockdowns. After the fight I shook her hand and congratulated her. But ever
since this happened my kids don't want to go back to the gym and neither does
my gf.
And my reply....
ReplyDeleteThis is a very brave, honest and well written account, I have a lot of respect for you and I wanna tell you that you really shouldn't feel so bad. The fact is that girls actually make totally awesome natural fighters, but few realise it because it has been hidden by centuries of social conditioning. The fact she was half your age and only trained for a month is proof of her female awesomeness - not of any weakness on your part. If it was an 18 year-old guy with a month's training - you would have no doubt pulverised him....It's a fairly recent phenomenon, so not many people get it yet, but more and more girls are taking up combat sports and pursuing them to a higher level. They are getting to grips with their physicality and this is causing a huge problem for men because they are often proving to be superior, not just regularly winning mixed bouts, but doing so with ease. In gyms across the world, many seasoned hard men are experiencing this phenomenon and coming to grief at the hands of much younger and less experienced girls. In the coming years females will make giant steps forward in the sporting and physical world and we are all going to have to adjust our attitudes on gender roles and abilities. You have nothing to be ashamed of, believe me, I speak from experience, my partner went through something similar and acceptance is the key. Once you can fully accept what happened, you can begin to revaluate your views on female capability and educate you kids and gf accordingly...Your and their feelings of embarrassment, shame and disappointment are all based on a false premise - which is that females are always physically inferior to males - and this is absolutely NOT the case! It's a shame that you felt the need to leave that particular gym - I would go back if I were you. You won't be the last guy she beats, there will soon be others and you'll be in good company. Also, I would forget any ideas about a rematch, you might think that your desire to restore your pride and get even with her is the strongest force imaginable, but believe me, her determination to beat and humiliate you again will be stronger and her confidence and ability to do so is only gong to increase...
And his response....
DeleteThank you for that. I agree with everything you just said. I was really shocked by everything that had happened. I've actually spoken to people who witness our bout and they said she capitalized on my early mistakes and that I was really close to having the bout stopped in the first round but I got thru the round. Although I went on to win the next two rounds I suffered two knockdown in the first round and in a real street fight she would have finished me off I would not have saved by the bell so that's why I agree with your statement that she would beat me again. This loss was hard to swallow especially since I lost to a girly girl who would come and ask for fighting lessons and she would show up dressed like a young girl. But she did fight smart and she is a fast learner I noticed that right away. As far as my family goes my kids have seemed to forgot the incident perhaps they blacked it out of their minds we don't talk about it.
she probably hung back after the first round because she didn't expect to be able to beat him, so easy either and felt awkward about it
Deletenow she has had time to reflect and relish thw awesomeness of her victory, you can rest assured in a rematch she will be less kind
+ more men will now probably experience the pain that is Briana :D
Hey gnome mage, great link, and this ties in with the stats about wrestling, female victory is so convincing you can see that when a man wins it is more likely because of fluke than anything else (Lucia Rijkers loss), and this is all while society imposes many handicaps on women’s training
ReplyDeleteAnd it has been going on longer than people think, here is some boxing history
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/amazons-of-yesterday/query/boxing+women
a professional mixed fairground fight between a male boxer and a female (unidentified on pathe news but she looks like marie ford to me, if it is her she would probably be about 18 in this footage). Very traditional boxing style for the day and the man is very proficient but her footweotk and counters! Totally annihilates him! xD Marie ford was both a boxer and a wrestler and even fought men in very early forms of mma where her signature move was to soften up her male opponent with thundering body blows, lock a hold on his neck, throw him down, and pin him to the mat.xx>>xy #girrrlzrule. Ace
This happens all too often I am very happy to say :D
ReplyDeleteAnd this actually ties in with a conversation I was having the other day with the coach of the old boxing club I went to for a bit a few years back. He was telling me they have a girl there, just 17, who basically is beating the crap out of all the male boxers in the gym and he is desperate for female sparring partners for her - She can’t get a proper spar even against his best men because she takes them apart to easily. He said even he doesn’t like sparring her, she seems to know intuitively (if find this as well, we are very good reading opponents) what you are going to do before you do it and punishes you with sledgehammer punches. I was impressed and pleased with his frankness, he said that 5 years ago when you had a girl in the gym before sparring you would remind the guys to go easy because they are sparring a lady, nowadays you have to tell the girls to ease of the power because they are only up against guys! He said if the same amount of girls boxed as guys they would totally dominate the sport and god forbid the men if mixed bouts were ever sanctioned!!! The conclusion of the convo was he asked if I didn’t mind coming down and doing some sparring with her since I am the only one local he knows that could possibly hang with her. I really enjoy boxing and have been doing a fair bit of muay thai lately, so if I have time I may well just take up boxing again to help fly the flag for female punching power :D xD xx>>xy #girrrlzrule Ace
I agree, it will be nice if you can help her.
DeleteStriker
Hi Ace,
DeleteI reread this post and was wondering if you were able to help that girl with boxing by picking up boxing yourself and spar with her? It's so cool that the boys are brushed aside and that another woman has to step in to help that girl train. Girlpower.
There you go - perfect confirmation that bears out what we have been saying. It reminds me of a news item I saw many years ago, that featured a young female boxer (quite a novelty at the time)and the interview with her coach - an experienced "Angelo Dundee" type character - who stated that his job was easy as "You don't need to teach females how to fight - they do it instinctively. All you have to work on is the fitness".
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear such frankness from your ex-coach and the acceptance that you now have to warn the girls to take it easy on the guys - not the other way around. I'm also really impressed that he cares enough to want to develop her talent and doesn't see her as a threat to the male status quo - sounds like a really cool guy!
It would be really great if you could find time in your busy schedule to help her out and I would love to hear about the experience if you did. One of my loftier ambitions for this blog is to create a real life network of Amazons who can connect and offer support and practical advice and generally help eachother out. So far we have a good readership - averaging between 50 -100 pageviews a day - although this is largely a mute audience, probably mostly male and it is difficult to know what effect on female attitudes the blog is having (if any), so any real life experiences shared are always welcome. Flying the flag for female punching power - Love it!
A great story and a great reply form Xaan. I know well, how he felt after his defeat and he was lucky, that Briana had only one month of training, otherwise there wouldn't have been a second round or even a third round.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to hear that more and more men (and women!) make the experience of the superior female physically power.
This should "adjust our attitudes on gender roles and abilities".
Especially combat sports are associated with "masculinity", and when the women totally overpower us there, "masculinity" gets a very new meaning.
Hey gnome Mage thanks for the link to the book, it’s one I don’t know, seems a good read, it’s good that a male martial arts expert realises that the female is the superior fighter, shame he is unaware of our superior strength though :/
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the video, the skill she displays for a boxing pundit is a joy isn’t it! he couldn’t touch her! her combo at 7 sec is beautiful, the shot at 22 s is a peach, she loaded up for it perfect, I think if that were today the fight would have been stopped there, note how wobbly his legs are after. And then the ko, she draws him onto the shot perfect, the timing, the precision, right hand to the back of the ear bang! (See how he writhes and wobbles on the ground) game over! It’s funny in this Victorian era where women believed to be frail and weak that there is this suppressed history of the circus and carnival strongwomen who not only were all multi-disciplined in boxing, wrestling and weight lifting they were officially recognised as being the strongest humans and most feared fighters on the planet, yet now they are forgotten as is the term they were known by, ‘Bozark’ I wrote an article on them which I will repost here (sorry it has a wrestling bias, I know you are more a boxing aficionado)
In the US In the late 1800’s and early to mid 1900’s as part of local carnivals, Catch Wrestlers would take on all challengers as part of the “athletic show” where locals could stand a chance to win cash if they could pin or submit the wrestler. The wrestlers had to prepare for the worst kind of unarmed assault and sometimes needed to end the wrestling match with any tough local quickly and decisively via submission known as a hook. There are no points for position in Catch Wrestling, the only ways to win a match are to pin or submit your opponent using one of the many fast and aggressive hooks It was a popular sport that early on featured predominantly veterans of the Civil War who had wrestling and fighting skills but lacked an appropriate outlet in which to showcase them. They would join these traveling carnivals and go from town to town offering to fight the local tough guys. It is here in these isolated towns in the deepest mid-west that we find the pioneers of modern women’s wrestling, the Bozark - the farm girl wrestler. We still today have the classic farm girl cliché of course (e.g. elly may in the Beverly hillbillies), a kind of rural girldom; whilst sporting girlish pigtails these farm girls were often very tomboyish and aggressive. Extremely handy with fighting/wrestling and lifting heavy things, from having to be physically active and such from childhood – These were girls who could actually wrestle and were frightening strong from e.g. throwing hay bales day in day out. They often struck fear in the travelling catch wrestlers - when the carnival hit town they would take on all comers yet quickly close the show if any farm girls stepped forward. Some of these girls though found employment joining the carnival as wrestlers and boxers, they became known as Bozarks, the carnival fighting girls, and like the men would take on all comers. In the carny community the Bozarks were the most feared and revered, the wrestling adage went, ‘a good big guy will always beat a good small guy, but a Bozark will beat anyone’. While the legacy of the Bozark is being kept alive by the resurgence of modern western women’s wrestling and boxing, the folklore and stories of the Bozarks unfortunately are fast becoming a forgotten memory but here is a link to a photo of a Bozark standing on a platform next to 2 male catch wrestlers, ready to kick ass. She is smaller than the guys but even in this old photo (1930’s I’m) you really get a sense of the aura of power and intimidation she exudes

Note in the video, Marie is also wearing the frilly leotard and wrestling boots synonymous with the uniform of the Bozark. Bozarks although a US term existed worldwide I have researched loads into the deeds and personalities of some of them, (Xaan if you like I could post an article). E.g. probably the greatest Bozark, Katie Sandwina, a woman who by the age of 16 was undefeated against over 200 men in wrestling, by her early 20s had defeated the worlds strongest man in a strength competition and in her 40s caused heavyweight boxing champion max schmeling to flee town rather than get in the ring with her. Her son, Ted, was a notable heavyweight boxer, who was sparring partner to Max, was under no illusions that his mum would have destroyed him. Here is a video of her boxing training her son.

observe how much more powerful her punches are than his and how she has total control of the centre of the ring whilst sparring.
Hey yes the Ecuador match was actually a friendly warm up meet before the pan American games between the Ecuador judo mens team and the Cuban womens judo squad and you are correct the Ecuadorian men got beaten savagely, losing 28 fights out of 30. It was widely acknowledged as a crushing victory over Ecuadorian males. The women judoists/man beaters were Driulis Gonzalez (63 kg), Yurisleidis Lupetey (57 kg) and Yurisel Laborde (78 kg), bronze medallists at Athens 2004 Olympics. Others included Edilia Amoros (52 kg), Yartiza Abel (63 kg), Onis Cortes (70 kg), Yanelis Castillo (78 kg) and even youngsters Dayani Mestre (44 kg), Yanet Bermoy (48 kg) who both gave away 10kgs and won their fights against men! Back in 2000 Japan also sent a team of male black belts on tour in china during which they participated in a friendly against the Chinese women’s Shuai Chia wrestling squad, notable on that team was 15 year old Wang Xu who later won wrestling gold in the 72kg category at the 2004 Olympics. The Chinese girls really went to town on them - gave them a very humiliating spanking!
ReplyDeleteThe lower gravity is true, but it is just one advantage of many (speed, flexibility, agility, pound for pound strength, coordination, reflexes etc)
Fantastic match awesome wrestling – I think japanese women wrestlers are probably the best in the world, wayyyy better than any man and pretty much most other nations female wrestling squads. Catch wrestling which they excel at is big in japan, it’s really good to see :) the way she transitions from one position to the next in control the whole time against a much larger opponent, awesome she completety dominates him and takes him apart. But this is totally what always happens a trained female is always the person to put your money on in a mixed match, thank you for sharing :D
I just want to say "Thank you" to Gnome for his great comments and usefull links. It's allways good to hear from a fellow guy with simular experiences to the fact of female superiotity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Axel. Makes me wonder what that girl is capable of now that she has more time to practice and perfect her skills. Maybe she's able to KO her opponents.
ReplyDeleteThere can be a lot of difference from one opponent to another, else Mistresses wouldn't be so superior.
DeleteFrom what I have seen as well if you looked at the number of sanctioned mixed mma fights, no man has ever beat a woman the ones I know of are:
ReplyDeleteThe first was in 1998 at wsw world shoot wrestling show where Becki Levi, 6ft 1 16st 2nd dan judo black belt female boxer and national discus champion and one of the coaches for legendary mma fighter Dan Severn choked out the Mexican national heavyweight luchador (wrestling) champion Javio Flores in 3 minutes
2004 Irma ‘the gladiatrix’ Verhoeff took on Marc Gefferie world muay thai champion and top ranked mma fighter. It was called a draw even though she clearly won she made him miss in the stand up, repeatedly took him down and controlled the fight on the ground but the biased ref kept standing them up before she got the chance to sub him
In Brazil vale tudo Ediana Gomez took on and destroyed a bigger man muay thai instructor http://mmajunkie.com/2014/10/woman-vs-man-in-a-bare-knuckle-no-rules-fight-it-happened-and-the-story-behind-it-is-a-wild-one
Sherisse subero annhialted man mma fighter in exhipition match at the Paradise Boxing Championship in the British Virgin Islands
Just this year Larissa Schroeder beat Fernando Lemos in her MMA debut in a featherweight bout at Evolution SF Fight in Sao Francisco de Paula
And as it is very likely to happen I am looking forward to Gabi Garcia as she starts taking on men in mma due to a lack of female oppenents, http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2016/8/3/12371286/rizins-gabi-garcia-is-open-to-fighting-a-man
rest assured she will destroy them - here is footage of her sparring wanderlei silva one of the best male mma fighters of all time, she totally bullies and destroys him :) I cant see any man beating her xD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk0Sx539yiI
she is nicknamed 'hulk female' and gets the typical abuse from frightened men saying she is on roids because of her frame yet she has never failed many countless drug tests except once which was for taking a WOMANS feriltiy medication to help period pains ffs!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50WaGLpiZeE
